The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Borneo-Indonesia stands as a guardian of one of the planet’s most endangered ecosystems. This vital initiative shields the carbon-rich, peatland forest of Rimba Raya from the threat of palm oil estates, which would have released over 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere.

Instead, the project not only protects this precious land but also collaborates with local communities to achieve all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals. Nestled on the southern coast of Borneo, Rimba Raya, meaning “Infinite Forest,” serves as the flagship of InfiniteEARTH’s conservation and biodiversity efforts, the developer of the project.

The Reserve is a sanctuary for hundreds of endangered mammal species and a nurturing ground for community programs spanning nine local villages. Rimba Raya generates carbon credits from its High Conservation Value (HCV) tropical peat forest, which houses over 350 million tonnes of stored carbon within its peat domes.

Rimba Raya has been a trailblazer in many ways:

  • The very first project ever validated as a REDD+ project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), helping establish the criteria for all future projects.
  • The first REDD+ forest-carbon project globally to receive a triple-gold validation under the Climate Community and Biodiversity Alliance Standard (CCBA).
  • Earthly rated

In September 2020, the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve reached another historic milestone becoming the world’s first REDD+ project to undergo a rigorous audit for compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the SD Vista Standard, receiving the highest possible rating for contributing to all 17 UN SDGs.
